Paul Rommer

Professor Paulus S. Rommer is Associate Professor of Neurology at the Medical University of Vienna. His clinical and research focus lies on neuroimmunological disorders, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). He has extensive experience in clinical research, including serving as medical lead in a global Phase III trial in MS. His work combines patient-centred care with translational research. A central focus lies in the identification and validation of biomarkers in serum and cerebrospinal fluid to improve prognostic accuracy and support individualised treatment strategies. This includes advanced serological analyses, neuroaxonal markers, and high-resolution imaging techniques such as 7-Tesla MRI. One of his current research interests is the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in MS pathogenesis. Professor Rommer is clinically involved in studies investigating EBV-related immune responses, aiming to develop predictive models and improve early identification of high-risk individuals. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and coordinates long-standing interdisciplinary collaborations with leading academic centres across Europe and beyond.
